Remove Dialer Trojan
April 23, 2008
There are many versions of dialer Trojan horse viruses / spyware and adware. These are not only extremely annoying they can be expensive as well. If you have a dial up system and pay extra for long distance calls, dialer Trojans like Dialer.Inproc.B can leave you with a huge phone bill as it makes calls to long distance numbers and 900 numbers too.
How can you tell if you have a dialer Trojan on your system? If you have Dialer.Inproc.B then you will be able to find the files Egcomservice2.dll and Egcomservice_1051.dll in your Windows system directory. The exact location of this directory will depend on your version of Windows.
The good news is that if you have a broadband connection like cable or DSL, then dialer Trojans pose no threat to you financially. They rely on dialup connections in order to make expensive calls. With DSL or broadband cable, you do not pay for long distance so this makes the dialer useless. In addition, it is looking for a dial up connection. When it cannot locate one, the virus has nothing to do.
However, this does not mean that these problems should remain on your system. Hopefully you have a good anti-virus program and it will detect and quarantine most Trojan dialer threats. Your firewall should be fairly adept at stopping these threats as well. If you are continually infected with these viruses, then it is time to change your core group of software in order to better protect your system.
There are a number of different dialer Trojans. The ability to remove dialer Trojan viruses depends on your ability to identify and locate them on your system. To list every possible dialer.trojan you could come across would take up more space than this article will allow so here are some basic removal techniques that you can use no matter what dialer is effecting your system.
First, make a backup of your registry. Then if you are running Windows ME or XP turn off the system restore feature as dialers can remain in the restore files. Locate the exact dialer trojan you are looking for by taking the information your antivirus software has provided to you or use a program called HijackThis to locate the exact files. Then with the information you have, reboot the computer in safe mode. Do this by pressing the F8 key while your system is booting. Delete the files from your Windows system folder. If you ran HijackThis, you can run it again and see which registry entries require deleting. Be careful with the internet options. Only delete these files if they are not associated with your internet connection. If you delete them in error, you will not be able to access the internet. Once you have selected and deleted the files associated with the dialer, reboot your system and all should be well. These are just general instructions to remove dialer.trojan viruses. The exact method and files you would need to remove depends on the exact dialer you are removing.
Be sure that you have good anti-virus and firewall software installed as well as good anti-spy software that detects, removes and blocks potential threats. This way you greatly reduce any potential risks to your system and learning how to remove dialer.trojan will be something you’ll never need to know.
