Remove About Blank - If you are having trouble with your homepage suddenly going to an about blank page when you start your browser, you are the victim of a browser hijacking. This is malware and it can be a real pain to fix. Spyware and malware like this hijacker is becoming more and more of a problem. Every computer should have a decent spyware blocking program installed on their computer. The good news is that this one is not terribly involved; you just have to be very careful if you are not familiar with your systems registry.
Here is how to remove the about blank hijack. First go to your registry and make a backup. This may sound weird because we need to change it to remove the hijack, but if you mess it up it is better to have a backup with a browser hijack than no backup at all. Next, be sure you know how to start your computer in safe made, again just in case things go wrong.
In order to remove this file set your computer to show hidden files. Depending on your operating system, the commands are different. It should be in the control panel under system. Now you have the registry backed up, you know how to start your computer in safe mode, you have the operating system CD just in case, and you have set your computer to show hidden files. When you have all of this accomplished go to your start menu and select run.
You will type in the word regedit in the box and hit enter. The next screen is your registry. You need to look for the following entry in HK_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\Current Version\Windows then look for the entry AppInit_DLLs. When you click on the AppInit_Dlls entry, you will see a file or file names listed on the right hand side of the screen. Write these names down exactly as you see them. Alternatively, cut and paste them into a notepad file. Now delete entry in the value data field. If asked if you wish to delete the entry choose yes.
Next, you are going to search your computers registry for all instances of those files you just copied. Go to Edit, select find, and type in the file name, hit enter. You will do this for each file separately. When you find an entry, delete it and choose find next. Continue doing this until there are no more instances of that file in the registry. If you have more than one file name written down, repeat this process with the next file name.
Close off the registry and exit. You will need to find your windows\system32\ folder on your C drive. Once you have found it, search for the file names you just wrote down. If you find them, rename each of these files to BadBrowserFile.dll, BadBrowserFile2, etc., until all of the files have been renamed. All you have left to do is to reboot your computer. This should end your problem.
