Phishing eBay Solutions
January 6, 2007
Today popular ecommerce sites like paypal and ebay are prime targets for fraudsters who try to lure unsuspecting users into phony transactions. This practice that is known as “phishing” has become more and more of a problem in the last 12 months.
One phishing technique that is used by malicious hackers via the ebay auction site involves soliciting payments from successful bidders. The hackers take advantage of ebay’s site to send questions to sellers enticing them to pay for items that have just recently sold. The “lure” they use comes in the form of a “second chance” system that is built into ebay.
These fraudsters gain “Trust” on ebay by setting up various accounts and then sell several low priced items in a day or two which builds up a certain level of ebay “trust”. As always consumers must be vigilant and careful when dealing with others online. While ebay is set up “like a ecommerce site” consumers are dealing with other individuals and not ebay. This type of auction site invites scammers and because of that consumers must be more careful.
