Holdiay Shopping Season Means Additional Spyware Threats

November 24, 2006

Spyware threats are on the rise as the Christmas shopping holiday draws near. Shoppers should be aware of the fact that malicious coders target personal information day in and day out, their jackpot is personal data in the form of passwords and login information to private banking sites, ebay and often times paypal.

It is widely believed that spyware and adware will make up more than 90% of pc threats in the coming months, while virus are still a major problem today public enemy number one is spyware. Consumers who take advantage of online banking and spend a great deal of time online should be especially careful. Never give out your personal passwords to anyone, some malicious hackers are now even calling people up on the phone in an effort to “breach” their personal data. Another tactic that hackers use is to claim their are with the customers bank or employed by paypal or ebay, they then ask for a password in an email or might even have set up a phony “look alike” website and ask the member to login with their username and password to “verify account activity”.

Always check the site address and NEVER login to these sites, doing so will reveal your username and password and could put your account at risk. If you suspect you might have been taken advantage of by a fraudster you should close your suspected account asap and then contact the FTC right away.
