Computer Spyware Scan

A computer spyware scan consists of using a program to scan files, folders, programs and your computer’s registry to detect programs that should not be there. These programs are malicious in nature and are called spyware and malware. It is important that every computer have the ability to scan for spyware. Spyware or malware will slow down your computer, corrupt files, possibly log your keystrokes and internet activity and can pose a risk to your identity and leave you open to credit card theft.

Spyware is installed when you download music, videos, flash programs, or when sites install cookies on your computer. All of these can contain some form of spyware. Frequently free programs contain adware and or spyware. Removing these programs can be difficult. Detecting them without the aid of anti-spy software can be next to impossible.

You can get free computer spyware scans. McAfee, and many other software companies offer you a free trial of their software. All of these free trials are robust enough to detect any spyware that may reside on your system. If a problem is found, some free trials will allow you to delete them, others you will have to do it manually. Another option is to use a free spyware removal program such as SpyBot SD or AdAware. Both of these programs are readily available and they are extremely effective at detecting most threats to your computer. Neither one however will deal with rootkits. These are nasty programs that get hidden deep in your computers registry. They are difficult to detect and remove. AVG has a free rootkit scan. This is something that you may want to look into.

So what does spyware actually do to your system? There are many different forms of spyware and malware. They can be keystroke loggers. These programs monitor your keystrokes. In addition, they can monitor the websites you visit and the information they receive can be sold to third parties or used for criminal purposes such as identity theft and credit card fraud. Hijackers will redirect your homepage and browser to a website that may look identical to the homepage you are used to. However, your internet browsing is monitored and the security of your banking and other online accounts can be compromised via password theft. Adware will plague you with pop-ups. All of these programs use tremendous amounts of your computers resources. One of the key indicators that you have a spyware or malware problem is that your computer does not perform as well as it used to.

It is important to find an anti-spy software program that you like and find easy to use. With a computer spyware scan and removal program installed, you will keep your computer free from malicious code and your identity and credit card information will remain safe. While you can attempt to do this yourself, it would take a ridiculous amount of time and energy. With so many great programs available, some of them free, there is no reason not to have some form of computer spyware scan on your computer.
